Sketches for 2014, number 33 — Gothic eagle

Location: Tierra de Barros, Spain
This is my digitally-enhanced drawing of a 6th century eagle-shaped fibula, found in a Visigoth grave in Spain – although now held in the US.

I created the above image from this pencil sketch I made today:

To create the digital version, I applied an edge detection filter to the drawing, and then applied fills using muted colours.

My sketch debt

Sketches for 2014, number 32 — Takht-e Marmar

I’m back! I have neglected my art over the last few weeks. I cannot stand it any longer! Happy to be drawing again…

Location: Tehran, Iran
This is one of the supports of the 250 year old Takht-e Marmar, literally The Marble Throne, a royal  throne in Golestan Palace.

Sketches for 2014, number 31 — Buddha’s hand

Location: Auckland, New Zealand
This bizarre-looking fruit, Buddha’s Hand, is a type of citron that originally came from China or North-East India.

It is used for its fragrance, and can also be used in foods such as salads. As such, it neatly ties into my post late last night announcing the start of my cooking studies blog: foodfn.

Sketches for 2014, number 29 — The Little Mermaid

Long overdue, here is the next in my 1-sketch-every-3-days series…

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Over the Little Mermaid’s 100 year history, this bronze statue has had its head cut off twice, arm once, and has been defaced many times. The status was modelled on prima ballerina Ellen Price, who played The Little Mermaid for the Royal Danish Ballet at the time. Because she didn’t want to pose nude, the face was based on the ballerina’s but the body was modelled by sculptor Edvard Eriksen’s own wife.

Sketches for 2014, number 27 — Cristo Redentor

Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Christ the Redeemer has looked over Rio de Janeiro since 1931. Instead of sketching the full height of the statue I opted to focus on the head and all-encompassing arms. The strong art deco lines in the sculpture made it easier to produce a striking drawing.
